Every year thousands of pilgrims get on their way to reach Santiago and its imposing Cathedral where the mortal remains of the apostle Saint James still rest.
 
During this tour you will leave Portugal in the morning and head north to the city of Santiago de Compostela crossing the border into Spain. Once you reach Santiago you will understand that despite the opulent buildings of the city it still managed to maintain all of its religious character. Walking in the historical center you will reach the outstanding cathedral and the main square of Santiago. After a detailed visit to the Cathedral and other reference monuments around it, you will have some free time for lunch (meal not included)
 
At lunch, it will be time to taste some of the local Galician specialties including some of the refreshing Galician wines. After lunch, you will return to Portugal and cross the river Minho that many times witnessed bloody battles between Portugal and Spain. To protect the population from the Spanish attacks the Portuguese kings erected fortresses along the border being the most impressive of them all the one in Valença do Minho. The 17th-century walls make this star-shaped fortress into an almost impenetrable structure. It's indeed a marvelous small town that when you walk you really feel like you've stepped back in time and you no longer want to return to real life.
