Self-Drive Tour - Family Holidays - "Pure Alentejo" - 8 days

Countryside & Sea in the Alentejo region

Day 1 to day 4– Arrival to Lisbon and car collection at the Airport. Departure towards the Alentejo.

On the first day of your vacation in Portugal you will start driving towards the wide Alentejo region to the little town of Terena. Deep in the heart of the Alentejo you will find Terena with its castle protecting the whole village and looking over the rolling hills and white washed houses of the region. This is indeed the perfect place if you want to experience the real life in the countryside. The sheep, the birds drinking from the swimming pool, the green of the cork oak trees and the yellow of the wheat will be the scenario surrounding you and your family! If you also want a little bit of adventure then the World Heritage Site of Évora is just a short drive away and where the Roman Temple, the Chapel of the Bones and the "alentejo spirit" will be waiting for you. Not so far away lies also the monumental Vila Viçosa royal palace, the impressive Monsaraz castle or even the vineyards of Reguengos. But of course that even closer will be just the company of a nice book by the sunset.

Three nights’ accommodation at Casa Tapada d'Aldeia (Terena)

"Hortinhas is a small village in deep rural Alentejo, where life is not always easy. But the typical persistence of the people who live here has kept alive this agglomeration of houses, built with the characteristic schist of the region, instead of the traditional lath-and-plaster. But, it's almost at the urban perimeter of the village, that we find Casa da Tapada d'Aldeia. With an architecture characterized by the traditional enclosed courtyard, it offers total privacy. After many years travelling all over the country, from Pousada to Pousada, Rita and Vasco Ataíde have found here the place they so long looked for, to build their weekend refuge. A neutral ground, which allows them to take a break from tumultuous life in the big city."

Day 4 to day 7– Departure to the Vicentina Coast (Vila Nova de Milfontes)

Leaving the deep Alentejo behind you will cross this region towards the Atlantic Ocean and to one of the most well preserved areas of Portugal: the Vicentina Coast. This is a remarkable area due to its beauty that granted it the title of protected landscape. Due to these preservation laws the area has somehow remained untouched by the mass tourism meaning that it's still possible to relax at quite places and enjoy excellent meals made with fresh fish or seafood in one of the many small villages along the coast. Vila Nova de Milfontes is probably the quaintest of these villages with its whitewashed houses with blue or yellow trims making an interesting contrast with the blue of the water. It's the ideal setting just to relax either at the hotel by the swimming pool or enjoying one of the many activities that are available that will allow you to spend quality time with your family.

Three nights’ accommodation at Naturarte (Vila Nova de Milfontes)

"Take the chance to enjoy the ideal location of this rural hotel to explore the beautiful landscape (nature, river and the ocean). Beyond the well-know beaches there are also some unexplored ones, sparsely visited even in the summer.  The guests can also use a swimming pool, a tennis-court and an equestrian centre."

Day 7 – Departure to Lisbon and overnight at hotel in the city

Today it will be the time to return to the capital of Portugal: Lisbon. If you still want to enjoy the rest of the day exploring the surroundings of the Hotel or just relaxing make sure you leave at least some time to explore Lisbon. Lisbon is a lively European capital where present and past live just side by side. Here you will have the opportunity to visit the largest Aquarium in Europe: the "Oceanário" (your children will be amazed) or to climb up the walls of the Saint George Castle at the top of the highest hill of Lisbon. If you still have time have a look at the area of Belém where hundreds of years of history await you in the monuments that celebrate the Portuguese discoveries of the past.
