Self-Drive Tour - Family Holidays - "Pure Portugal" - 8 days

The genuine side of a century old nation

Day 1 to day 4– Arrival to Lisbon and car collection at the Airport. Departure to the Alentejo.

After your arrival to Lisbon's airport it's time for you to cross the Alentejo Region towards Borba. The rolling hills of the Alentejo and its contrasting colors are one of the most distinguishing features of this region. The Moorish civilization left its presence behind in the little white washed houses and gastronomy. But as all the empires this one also came to an end after the Portuguese reconquest that comes back to our memory in the walls of the innumerous fortified little towns that you and your family can still explore passing by hundreds of years of history. In Borba there is so much to do! If you just want to hang around the Hotel then try the lovely swimming pool or the delicious gastronomy of the Alentejo in any of the nearby restaurants. But if instead you want to discover the genuine Alentejo then you're just a short drive from the World Heritage Site city of Évora and its unique Chapel of the Bones or even from the magnificent Ducal Palace of Vila Viçosa reminding you and your children of the former Portuguese royalty.

Three nights’ accommodation at Casa do Terreiro do Poço (Borba)

"Wine, palace-like manor houses and antique shops: this is how beautiful Borba could be described. And this is why Rita and João Cavaleiro Ferreira decided to open the Terreiros 13, 15, one of the most well-known antique shops in famous Rua dos Antiquários (Antique Shops Street), and also to recover Casa do Terreiro do Poço, an important piece of the local heritage. Referred in the Portuguese Artistic Inventory for its mural paintings and frescoes, the house has three main bodies which are connected by staircases and balconies. With 30 rooms, it is easy to understand why Rita and João are so glad to invite you to share a glass of excellent Borba wine, enjoying the mild temperature of a quiet nightfall."

Day 4 to day 7– Departure to Lamego

On the fourth day of your vacation it's time to know another of the most genuine regions of Portugal: the Douro Valley. Lamego still today reminds us its glorious days of the past when it was one of the most important cities of this region benefiting with the trade of wine, maintaining all of its historical past in perfect harmony with nature. All around Lamego lies the art of winemaking that you and your family can explore in any of the many estates in the Douro Region, either just in a stroll by the vineyards or even making your own wine! But if the main goal of your vacation was just to spend some quality time with your family then you also are in the perfect place. If you wake up in one of those hot summer mornings just put on your swimsuit and jump to the swimming pool. At the end of the morning the fun can continue either by trying some of the local specialties in a nearby restaurant or even doing your own barbecue!

Three nights’ accommodation at Casa de Santo António de Britiande

"Located between Lamego and Tarouca is Britiande, a village dating back to the times of the first King of Portugal. The landscape is basically agricultural composed of fruit trees namely apple, pear and cherry in addition to the vineyards. The House has his own Chapel and a 15th century façade. In ancient times was the retreat of Franciscan friars that came from the convent of Ferreirim to meditate and rest. It is part of the eight manor houses that existed in Britiande. This has been a family owned house since the 19th century converted to provide all its guests unique moments of leisure and relaxation."

Day 7 – Departure to Lisbon and overnight at hotel in the city

Today it will be the time to return to the capital of Portugal: Lisbon. If you still want to enjoy the rest of the day exploring the surroundings of the Hotel or just relaxing make sure you leave at least some time to explore Lisbon. Lisbon is a lively European capital where present and past live just side by side. Here you will have the opportunity to visit the largest Aquarium in Europe: the "Oceanário" (your children will be amazed) or to climb up the walls of the Saint George Castle at the top of the highest hill of Lisbon. If you still have time have a look at the area of Belém where hundreds of years of history await you in the monuments that celebrate the Portuguese discoveries of the past.
